Your marketing efforts are only as good as the people you deliver them to. In our industry, we call the “right people” our target audience. A target audience is a group of people most likely to want your product or service. Knowing who this group of people are is the first step to having a successful marketing campaign. How do you pin down this group, and what do you do with that information? Let’s talk about it.
START BY ANALYZING
Instead of guessing, let’s start with some research. Take a look at who your current customers are and who your competition is targeting. For example, you can look at several factors like age, gender, location, and interests. You may have one broad audience or multiple specific, niche audiences, depending on what your product or service is.
A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customers. After you’ve done your research, you can find patterns within that information and use it to understand what kind of person is most prominent. For instance, let’s say you sell books, one persona may be “Teacher Tina,'' another could be “Avid Reader Adam,, and a third could be “Mother Melinda.” Each of these kinds of people have different needs in a bookstore. We want to serve them specific messages based on those needs.
HOW TO REACH THESE AUDIENCES
